Introduction

If you’re passionate about education and considering becoming a Governor, this could be the perfect opportunity to make a real difference in your local community. There are currently over 250,000 volunteers serving as governors across the country, all playing a vital role in shaping the future of education. However, 2022 research from the National Governors Association found that there are around 20,000 vacancies in England, with two thirds of boards reporting at least one vacancy. Here’s an overview of what the position entails.

A School Governor works collaboratively with the rest of the Governing Board, dedicated to improving the educational outcomes for students. To be eligible, you must be over 18 years old and have a genuine interest in education and supporting the local community.

As a Governor, your responsibilities include constructively challenging school processes, using your skills to support Senior Leaders, and overseeing financial management. You’ll be involved in various aspects of governance, such as monitoring performance, managing budgets, and analysing data. Additionally, there are opportunities for training and professional development, helping you to enhance your expertise.

Governors typically attend full board meetings once a term, alongside committee meetings that are relevant to their particular skill set, whether that’s in teaching and learning or finance and resources. Prior to each meeting, Governors are expected to review the agenda and relevant documents. You may also be invited to visit the school from time to time and participate in further training sessions.

Governance in Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs)

Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) are vital within Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs), though the legal responsibility for the Trust’s operations lies with the Trust Board itself. The Trust must comply with the Department for Education (DfE) requirements and is accountable for the performance of all the schools under its umbrella.

Becoming a Governor gives you the chance to share your ideas and contribute to shaping the school’s strategic vision. While the role presents challenges, it also provides the support necessary to help you make meaningful contributions to the governance of schools and improve the educational landscape for future generations.
