GOVERNANCE TEAM – STAFF PROFILES
Our staff have a wealth of experience in governance and bring together leadership skills from the education, governance, HR and Legal sectors. Staff are governors (or Chairs) at local schools and academies.
Our core focus is to support schools to keep abreast of their governance and business compliance functions.
We are expertly placed to offer comprehensive support, combining expertise in academic and business needs within education to ensure efficient practices and ongoing development.

Claire Mitchell
Leadership & Governance Partner
Claire is a Governance Academy Improvement Professional.
Claire has experience managing ESFA funded learning provision in excess of £10 million for 150+ education and skills providers.
With over a decade of experience within education and skills she is expertly placed to support Trusts due to her deep understanding of academic and compliance requirements.

Sue Richardson
Governance Support Service Manager
Sue is a Governance and School Improvement specialist who has worked in the field of Education for 30 years; her varied experience enables her to offer understanding of strategic working within both Academy and Local Authority maintained frameworks.
Her roles included a number of senior leadership positions, most recently that of Headteacher and has gained experience of many complex processes including exclusions, admissions and complaint management, allowing her to provide a top standard of services and help ensure compliance.

Paula Whiting
Office Manager
Paula’s vast experience at both the business and educational sectors over three decades will ensure the smooth management of the Berry Education office.
Paula was a parent governor for over 10 years and a school secretary which has given her a good understanding of the day to day primary school and the challenges this can bring
She is passionate about guaranteeing high professional standards are maintained and looks forward to building strong mutual relationships with the Trust Committees, Governors, Academies & Schools.

Bill Deakin
Governance Partner
Over the years Bill has held a variety of roles in governance and has monitored a variety of subjects/areas.
Bill has also undertaken extensive training as a safeguarding-link Academy councillor and made a career change to professional clerking.
With the experience Bill brings to Berry Education it allows him to deliver clerking services to the highest standard for his clients.

Paula Marshall
Governance Partner
Paula is a Governance Partner with over 20 years’ experience working in the education sector, including being a staff governor and working with SEN learners as well as SEMH.
With the experience and skills gained through working with professionals and the Senior Leadership Team, Paula joined Berry Education to utilise her well-developed knowledge in governance and interpersonal skills to support Trusts and Governors.

Marie Skipsey
Governance Partner
Marie has worked in the education sector for over 25 years, taking on a number of roles including serving as a staff governor in that time.
Marie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience of Primary Education to the Berry Team and is well placed to offer support to schools and governors

Phil Anderson
Governance Partner
Phil has worked within the education sector for over a decade as a teacher and school leader, and more recently for a national charity in the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) sector.
He is currently the Chair of a Local Governing Committee within a Multi-Academy Trust in Newcastle, with significant experience conducting exclusion panel hearings and the role of the link-safeguarding governor.
His experience in training and development, as well as working with schools at all levels, enables him to adapt quickly to the needs of schools and offer bespoke support.

Ruth Callaghan
Governance Partner
Ruth joined Berry in March 2022 with over 20 years of experience in governance. Her career started in central government where she held a number of research and policy roles with bodies including London School of Economics (LSE) Ofsted and the ESFA’s predecessor body.
During this time, she worked with a wide range of Boards from stakeholder engagement forums through to a national government advisory board. In her role as Board Secretary she worked with national experts, academics, politicians and business leaders to ensure robust governance arrangements were in place and were capable of upholding public and media scrutiny.
In 2020 Ruth took a governance role within a MAT and now applies those skills within the education sector. Within Berry she specialises in panel work including exclusions, admissions and complaints.

Ethan Campbell
Marketing Apprentice
Ethan is our marketing apprentice who recently started in the beginning of November.
Ethan has a deep interest in all things marketing and a fresh insight on the challenges schools face after leaving school in 2020.
He joined the Berry Education team determined to learn relevant skills for a successful career and to aid in the betterment of Trusts and education.
