Clennell Education Solutions: Annual Governance Refresher

Governors are facing an increasing level of scrutiny in Ofsted inspections. CES encourage Governors to not only participate in school-based staff training, but also to attend a session specifically designed to enable Governors to fulfil their statutory duties.

There are multiple dates: 24th September, 9th October, 21st October.

Overwhelming Challenges of Headship

30-40% of Headteachers plan to leave the role in the next three years. This was one of the findings of the Rethinking Headship survey report conducted by the schools, students and teachers network (SSAT).

The report provides a worrying insight into headteacher wellbeing. It identifies that a failure to provide effective preparation, induction, training and support (alongside significantly increased demands on them from all quarters) needs to be urgently addressed.

Ofsted Ungraded Inspection Changes

In the Autumn term, ungraded inspections will no longer include deep dives. Instead, these inspections will emphasise professional dialogue between inspectors and school leadership, focusing on areas of improvement and success.

“The areas of focus will influence what inspectors do when they’re in school. At least a couple of these areas will be related to the quality of education, as you might expect. But they won’t focus on one subject and they won’t be deep dives. Instead, inspectors will look at a group of subjects together.”

Governance Financial Fears at Record High

In the survey of more than 3,000 governors and trustees, 60 per cent of respondents reported that balancing budgets is now their biggest challenge – the highest proportion since the National Governance Association (NGA) began its annual survey in 2012.
